Collaborating for Child Health: Gavi and Lifebuoy’s Impact in Uttar Pradesh
In 2017, Gavi-the Vaccine Alliance and Unilever’s Lifebuoy joined forces for Project Safal Shuruaat, an initiative aimed at improving child health and well-being in Uttar Pradesh, India. With GroupM as the implementing agency, this collaborative effort focused on promoting full immunization and handwashing with soap (HWWS) among parents of children aged 0 to 2 years to combat child mortality due to preventable infections. Aligned with the Government of India’s priorities, the project harnessed community involvement, empowered healthcare workers, and utilized technology and digital platforms to foster awareness and drive behavior change. Through their united efforts, Gavi, Lifebuoy, and their partners demonstrated evidence-based impact and sustainability in transforming child health outcomes in Uttar Pradesh.
A Strategic Choice: Rationale and Extensive Outreach in Uttar Pradesh
Millions of children worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, tragically lose their lives each year before reaching the age of five. In India, although the under-five mortality rate has decreased, it still bears a significant burden of child deaths. Preventable infections like pneumonia and diarrhea continue to be the leading causes of child mortality. Many families remain unaware of the importance of simple measures like handwashing with soap and immunization in preventing such infections. To address this, Project Safal Shuruaat strives to create a transformative shift in behavior that promotes a healthier and happier tomorrow. By targeting prevalent socio-ecological barriers, raising awareness, fostering behavior change, and enhancing the adoption of crucial healthcare practices, the project aspires to save young lives and build a brighter future for children. Successful Parenting: The Key to Safal Shuruaat’s Communication Success
Our communication strategy revolves around a powerful insight: ‘Every parent desires their child’s success in the future’. With this understanding, we reframe immunization and handwashing with soap (HWWS) as essential steps towards achieving that success. By emphasizing early action and cost-effective disease prevention, we empower parents to prioritize these practices. In addition to prioritizing immunization and HWWS, the project, under the umbrella of ‘parenting,’ highlights the importance of adequate nutrition, early enrichment activities, and enhanced parenting skills in fostering a child’s holistic healthy development. Our approach engages couples, families, and communities, addressing barriers at every level. By actively involving fathers and placing equal responsibility on parents, we shape a brighter future where success and well-being are intertwined. Read More…
